About the Matrix PDF Print E-mail

The North Carolina Chapter has organized itself using the “Matrix” concept. The Matrix concept involves several councils and committees, and is graphically portrayed as a checkerboard or Matrix. Within the Matrix, the North Carolina Chapter has six councils. One member of the Board of Directors heads each council. The councils represent the Chapter’s operating divisions in each of six areas: Education, Membership, Programs, Management Practices, Publications and Proaction.  Each of these councils has a business plan for service to the membership for its particular area of interest.  The different business plans of the councils support the overall Chapter’s Strategic Plan.

Each of these areas of membership service will likely involve several, if not all, of the six technical areas. These areas are Hospital Services, Physician Services, Payor/Managed Care, Compliance, Information Management and Technology.  These technical areas constitute the committees of the Matrix.  Each member of the Matrix who serves on a council also serves on a committee. One of the members of the committee is designated as the chairperson of that committee for purposes of conducting committee meetings.  The technical committees provide support to the council in their respective technical areas.  An example may illustrate the manner in which the Matrix is intended to work.

Consider the case of a member of the Publication Council who is also on the Payor/Managed Care Committee.  As part of the individual’s role as council member, he or she may be assigned to obtain two articles for publication in the Newsletter on topics related to Payor/Managed Care issues.  That individual would then, in conjunction with other members of the Payor/Managed Care Committee, identify current issues on which useful information could be provided to members by publication of an article in the Tarheel News.  The members of the Payor/Managed Care Committee would also seek to identify and recruit an author for the specified article.

This process would be repeated for education sessions, program sessions, best practices, membership recruitment, etc., with other Committee members who are members of othe Councils.  Thus, the individual committee members, as subject matter specialists, are the source of identifying the needs of the members that can then be fulfilled by the operations of the various councils.

A special committee designed to support the Matrix is the Council Coordinating Committee, which is composed of the Council Chairperson of each of the six councils.  The President-Elect chairs the Council Coordinating Committee.  This committee is a key factor in the success of the Matrix activities, in that it provides an opportunity for council chairpersons to coordinate their various plans for membership service into a unified plan, which avoids both omission and duplication.

The Chapter has also established several special purpose committees, including the Sponsorship Committee, The Chapter Technology Committee, and the Chapter Financial Management Committee.  The Sponsorship Committee is responsible for the operation of the Chapter's Corporate Sponsorship Program.  The Chapter Technology Committee is responsible for providing for the chapter's access to and use of technology, such as the website, email, video/audio teleconferences, and webinars.  The Chapter Financial Management Committee assists with processing of chapter financial activities such as workshop and program registrations.  In accordance with Chapter's By-Laws, these special purpose committees have limited membership and are appointed by the Board of Directors.

It should be clear that this structure provides opportunities to be of service to your fellow members and our industry, to meet and network with your peers in your area of specialization, and to develop your leadership skills through working with others to accomplish assigned tasks.
